As an adult with a family now, you should take a few minutes to learn some of the important aspects of real dog ownership before you commit to your first puppy.

Dog Owner Reality #1 – Puppies are like human babies who poop on the floor. A puppy is like a toddler and until you’ve properly trained them they require constant looking after and follow-up. Even after you’ve housebroken your puppy he’ll still need to be supervised unless you want everything in your home to have a nice ‘chewed-upon’ look to it.

Dog Owner Reality #2 – Without Training a Puppy Goes Nuts. I remember the dogs of my childhood. My father would bring home a stray or a stray would sit on the front porch until my Mother gave in and started feeding it; enough said. These dogs were never trained. They barked at everything, dug up the yard and chewed up their own dog houses. One dog would dig out of the fenced in yard and run in traffic like a wild dog. So, in order to keep your dog safe from oncoming semi-trucks and your yard safe from doggie destruction, you’ll need to find puppy classes or at least purchase a good self-help dog obedience training book. Dogs need to be taught what’s expected of them just like your kids do. Oh, and while you’re at it, teach your kids how to socialize correctly with your new pet.

Dog Owner Reality #3 – Dogs Are Expensive. Very Expensive. And I’m not talking about how much the breeder charges for the sweet little bundle of slobber either. You’ll need to budget for puppy vaccinations, licensing, food, toys, bedding, kennels, flea and tick meds, heartworm meds and then if you have to leave for vacation and haven’t a pet sitter, then kennel boarding fees. The list goes on of course because there’s always something. Long story short, you’ll need to add the cost of caring for your new dog into your family budget for at least 10-15 years if not longer, depending on the breed you choose.

Dog Owner Reality #4 – Your Little Puppy Could Grow into a Huge DOG. Well, duh, but you’d be surprised at how many eager puppy owners fall madly in love with their new adorable little chubby cherub and then 6 months later wonder what in the world is this 100 lb.monster tracking mud into their kitchen and eating them out of house and home. Where’d the cherub go? He grew into a DOG that’s where, and with a little planning ahead, you’ll know pretty much exactly what to expect when your dog is grown up.

Dog Owner Reality #5 – Dogs Love to Run and Play – A lot. This could be a bonus or a big pain in the hiney depending on your lifestyle. If you’re into walking for exercise, then you’ll have a ready-made walking companion in your new dog. If you have kids, then they too will have built-in romping partners. One of the health benefits of dog ownership is the increased cardiovascular exercise they can bring to a family. Keep in mind however, that you can always choose a dog breed that doesn’t require quite as much extra activity if you’re not in the position to get out of the house daily. I recall how wonderful the baby swing in particular, was for moments of peace and quiet as well as much needed arm rest. A recent article (www.cnn.com/2005/HEALTH/parenting/02/23/baby.swings.dogs.ap/index.html) addresses valid concerns about dogs and mechanical swings. It is important to keep in mind that all dogs react differently and supervision is a must all the time!

I have seen first hand a variety of reactions to baby equipment by different dogs. Some dogs become desperate to chase and catch the moving swing while others seem to find it soothing. A human moving in the air is not normal to dogs and can be quite confusing even though the swing is grounded. It is important to know your dog’s reaction to different situations and stimuli. Here are some things to take into consideration:

1. Does your dog love to chase ANYTHING and everything?

2. Is your dog reactive to sudden motion?

3. Does he startle easily?

4. Is your dog sensitive to noise? If so, loud, soft or sudden? High or low pitch?

Adults in charge of supervising a baby must never allow the dog to remain in the room alone with a baby for even a second! This is a consistent key factor in most reports of attacks with newborns and dogs. This point must not be taken lightly. If the adult is not there for the dog to defer to and the baby makes noises the dog may be the first to respond and possibly tend to the baby. This is very dangerous as dogs communicate and relate very differently then we do as humans. What can caretakers and parents do to prevent such incidents?

It is best to introduce baby swings and all baby equipment to the family dog prior to the arrival of the baby. Baby swings have all sorts of gadgets these days! They vibrate, make music and even rotate. It is important to know your dog’s individual sensitivities and prepare him well ahead of time. Some points to consider with baby swings:

1. Once in motion some dogs find the natural desire to chase hard to control around baby swings.

2. The noise of a vibration device in the swing can have an irritating humming noise for some dogs.

3. Spinning objects that are meant to be visually stimulating to an infant may be enticing to a dog to catch.

4. Noises of the music may be irritating to some dogs’ sensitive ears.

It is important that family dogs learn how to behave calmly around all baby equipment prior to its use with an infant. Practice before your baby is home with a doll in the swing. Some dolls make noises and blink eyes etc. It sounds silly but it does help you role play and visualize the real situation. This allows a time for your dog to safely explore as you teach him how you want him to behave. Reward positive and appropriate behavior. Make this a positive experience. Ignore unwanted behavior and teach desired behavior. You do not want the first time your dog sees this new equipment to be when you REALLY are hoping the baby will go to sleep! Many dogs learn that the swing is just part of the new furniture and ignore it. This is ideal but still does not mean that it is safe to leave the room when a real infant is resting in the swing. Refreshing and practicing obedience now goes a long way towards a smoother transition once baby arrives.

Have a plan for the situations such as the phone ringing. Here are some ideas.

1. Close the door to where the baby is.

2. Take dog with you.

3. Put a leash on your dog in the house to keep him near by or to use as a tether to furniture to safely secure him.

4. Use a baby gate that you must physically lock in place to gate off area when the baby is. (Not for those that like the high jump!)

5. Offer your dog some great outdoor activity in a secured area.
As always it is NEVER safe to leave a baby and dog unsupervised for any reason at any time.

We live in a country where it is normal to treat our dogs as a members of the family - giving them Christmas presents (and receiving some from them, as well), taking them everywhere with us, dressing them up, giving them gourmet food, etc. As Americans, we just love our dogs! And why shouldn’t we?

One fun way to show our love for dogs is with dog jewelry. It is possible to find many different types of dog jewelry, but why not make your own? Making dog jewelry is a fun craft for kids or a great art project for adults. Make dog jewelry that resembles your own pet, or make jewelry to give away as gifts!

Here are a few ideas for how to make your own dog jewelry:

· Shrinky-Dink. If you have never used shrinky dink, it is about time you did! Be sure to follow the directions on the packaging… basically, though, you can color on the shrinky dink sheets (about the size of a standard piece of paper) - cut out a dog shape, color it in, poke a hole in it, then stick it in the oven (again, be sure to follow the directions on the packaging!) In the oven, your shrinky dink will shrink, leaving you with beautiful and detailed charms. You can add these charms to a charm bracelet, turn them into earrings, or make it into a necklace (to make these things, be sure that you poke a hole through it before you cook it!)

· Bottle Cap Dog Earrings. Take some favorite photos of your dog and cut out pieces that will fit in the underside of a bottle cap. Adhere the photo with Mod Podge (glue-like substance), then coat over the photo a few times with more Mod Podge. You can hot glue onto the back of these some earring studs.

· Doggie Bolo Tie. Pick up a bolo tie clasp (you can likely get one at a local craft store or bead store - if not, try to contact a Western wear store). Find a round and smooth piece of wood (it will be easier to find one at your local craft store). Use a wood burning kit to create a beautiful dog or doggie bone, or paint and then seal a dog on it. Glue the clasp onto the back. You can use a leather cord as your bolo cord.

· Bead Dog. You will need to head to a bead shop for this one. Pick up some wire (preferably sterling silver, at least 22 gauge), and also find a variety of rounded beads. Choose a large, rounded bead to be the body. Weave 3 pieces of wire through the hole - keep them long for now. The three wire ends at the front will be the two front legs and the head, the wire ends at the back will be the hind legs and the tail. For the tail, use lots of little beads, then twist the wire into a ball at the end to keep them on. The little beads allow your dog’s tail to bend however you want it. Use at least two medium size beads for the legs. For the head, use small beads for the neck, and a medium one for the head. You can paint eyes and a mouth on the head.

These are only a few ideas of what you can do to make your own dog jewelry. Be creative. Look around your house and see what you can use. Most of all, have fun!

We love our pets. Lots of us offer our pets the prized place on the bed or couch. Most of us buy our pets Christmas presents. Many of us have a harder time watching an animal die in a Hollywood film than the main character. But is it going a bit overboard when we start collecting figurines of our pets?

I say, “no.” We have photographs all over the house of our loved ones, why shouldn’t we have figurines of our pets? Of course, this is easy for me to say, and perhaps it is even a little defensive. Why? Because I have over a hundred dog figurines (a 101, to be exact!). To any “normal” person, that many dog figurines may seem like an absurd amount. Of course, to any collector, it sounds like a relatively small number.

You may wonder how I got started collecting dog figurines. Well, to be quite honest, it did not start out as a collection. In fact, when my beloved soft-coated wheaton terrier, Sadie O’Grady, died, I got a terrier figurine to place upon her urn. Somehow, I found it comforting to see the likeness of Sadie - even if it was in miniature.

My dogless days did not last long. I went out and brought myself home a puppy the very next week. I decided to stick within the terrier group, but I bought a miniature schnauzer, Woogie, instead of another Wheaton. One day, when I was out shopping at a garage sale, I found a dog figurine that looked almost exactly like my Woogie. Of course I had to buy it. After that day, I made a point of finding and buying any dog figurine that resembled Woogie. It was like a sort of happy pastime.

Soon, I started receiving schnauzer figurines every birthday and Christmas from my friends and family. I even received mug sets, t-shirts, pajamas, slippers, and other items, as well. After a while, people started sending me figurines representing other breeds, as well.

I started to display may dog figurines in a beautiful lit-up hatch. But they were soon cluttering it up, and I decided that I had had enough dog figurines for one lifetime. Of course, it was too late. My friends and family had already gotten too use to sending me a dog figurine or other dog paraphernalia for every holiday and birthday. It made their shopping easy.

I had never planned on starting a collection of dog figurines. Sometimes, it seems that a collection is something that other people choose for you. At least, this is how I felt. After Woogie died, though, I decided to put an end to my collection.

I thanked my friends and family for sending me so many beautiful dog figurines over the years, and then I told them to never do it again! To prove my point, I took the majority of my figurines - all but my most cherished 101 - to a neighborhood yard sale. All but a few of them sold, and those I donated to charity.

With the money that I made, I went out and bought myself another puppy, Shasta Daisy. I find that a true dog lover prefers the company of her dog over that of a few figurines. I still display my 101 dog figurines in the hatch, but that is where they will remain as Shasta Daisy and I take a walk off into the sunset.

These days it seems as though home security has become an industry focused on the newest and most cutting edge of gadgets and systems. Assuming that you have the means and space to keep a substantially sized dog on your property, perhaps the first thing to consider is whether you want a guard dog or a watch dog. The majority of dogs are watch dogs by instinctual manner, they will bark and become suspicious when something disturbs them (some on the other hand will approach strangers in the hope that they come bearing gifts of doggy treats, and than proceed to roll over for a belly rub). Some breeds have been trained to be better, or more alert, watch dogs than others. As well almost any medium to large sized dog has a certain air about him or her that seems to say, “You really want to mess with me?” Think about it, if you are walking down the street and you see someone walking a Corky you are far less likely to be alarmed or cautious than if you saw a bullmastiff coming your way. When talking about actual guard dogs, not your garden variety household watch dog, we are talking about a dog that has been trained and often bred for the purpose of guarding and defending your home.

Where a watch dog may bark, the threat often ends there (so hence the term “his bark is worse than his bite”). With a guard dog the opposite is true. While some people take it upon themselves to train their dog to be a guard dog, other folks opt to buy an animal that has been trained by an expert (who will typically be a dog breeder as well) in this field. Somewhere in between lays guard dog training classes, or private instructors that you may find listings for in larger cities or online.

A guard dog, while generally kind and calm with its master and family, is not the sort of animal that you let run free in the neighbourhood. It is an animal that has been trained to defend and at times even attack in order to protect its masters and property. They are strong, athletic dogs whose wolf and wild animal genetics have been honed and put to use in order to defend and protect. This is not to say that every guard dog is waiting to bite someone’s face off. On the contrary, as with almost all domestic dogs, if they are well handled and cared for from puppy-hood then a guard dog can have a gentle, sweet temperament around not only its owners but those people that its masters assure the dog are not a potential threat.

There are many things to consider when contemplating a guard dog. One key point is that training a dog solely to attack and physically do harm to other people is quite often considered illegal as it is in essence training the animal to be a weapon. Guard dogs should be on alert for all kinds of intruder or disturbances, from people to other animals or loud sounds. But at the same time they need to be well trained, aware of when, and only when it would be appropriate to actually do more than just bark. Always check the laws in your area or country when it comes to guard dogs, as some breeds are even illegal to own or train as guard animals in certain places. A middle ground between barking and attacking is a guard dog that has been trained to simply attempt to restrain the intruder (one method of this type of training is Schutzhund training).

Another important factor is the size and breed of the dog. Common breeds of guard dogs with successful track records include (but are not limited to) Akitas, Chow Chows, Mastiffs, German Shepherds, Doberman Pinschers, Dogue de Bordeauxs, Fila Brasileiro (a somewhat rare breed from Brazil), Rottweilers, Rhodesian Ridgebacks, Boxers, Great Pyreneeses, and yes, even the misunderstood Pit Bull Terrier.

Before you rush out to buy a guard dog though, or look at Fido your pet poodle and wonder if he’s trainable, consider that a guard dog requires a lot of care and attention. As well you will need to put up signs on your property warning visitors (and potential intruders) of your canine home security system. Should you decide to get a guard dog, love it and treat it as you would any dog, as you rest assured that your age old home security system is on guard twenty-four-seven. Ready to both bark and play fetch at the drop of a hat.

Many homeowners have dogs, and one of their most common questions is how can I have a beautiful lawn as well as a dog? If your dog is using your lawn to urinate on, then the simple answer is you cannot. Dog damage to lawns creates circular spots caused by urine burns. Generally it is the female and young males, which cause the greatest damage. This has nothing to do with the fact they are female, or young males, urine is urine. It has more to do with the way in which they urinate. Adult male dogs will urinate on shrubs, or areas around power poles, playground equipment or fence posts. They do this to mark their territory. Females tend to squat while urinating, causing a greater concentration on one area. Because of the high concentration of salt and urea, it causes a circular dead spot. Normally a ring of healthy grass will surround the dead patch. This is caused by nitrogen in the dog’s urine, which acts as a fertilizer.

PREVENTING DOG DAMAGE:

Having one certain area such as a graveled dog run goes a long way to keeping the majority of your lawn green and healthy. If you are unable to provide such an area, watering immediately after dilutes the urine and may prevent the damage from occurring. This must be done soon after the dog urinates, or this is ineffective.

REPAIRING DOG DAMAGED LAWNS:

Areas of grass, which have been damaged by dogs, have a very high concentration of salts, nitrogen, and urea. Generally if you put down seed in these areas, it will not germinate. You must first water the damaged areas to leach out as much of the chemicals as possible. Roughly rake out the dead area, and then add appropriate seed to the damaged area. Top dress with approximately ¼ of an inch of topsoil and keep the seed slightly moist until germination. Do not fertilize these areas until the root structure has a chance to become established. Generally 4-5 cuts are sufficient for this to occur.
